PR 06 – New flame retardant PP innovation announced by Luxus at PDM 2008 – 15th April 2008

Luxus announced the development of a new halogen free flame retardant polypropylene copolymer with VO rating. The compound has been formulated to retain more of the physical properties of the base material by using fewer additives compared to other VO halogen free systems.

Designated Type 16501, the compound can be successfully coloured but customer requirements need to be individually assessed to ensure appropriate pigmentation systems are used to meet application needs.

Initially the company is targeting injection moulding and pipe extrusion sectors where Luxus claim its new material will be very competitive.

Processing trials have been highly successful and the material is now ready for development to broaden its market appeal. Luxus see the product being ‘yellow carded’ once pigmentation and manufacturing volumes have been established. Enquiries for new application areas are welcome.

Visitors to the Luxus stand were also able to view other innovative materials including nano composites and biodegradable compounds. Micro pellet products capable of opening up new business opportunities for processors and end-users also served to illustrate the capability of Luxus’ technical centre to develop bespoke materials.

Components on display produced from Luxus developed materials included a Nissan automotive dashboard manufactured from a fully specified compound that incorporates recycled polymers. Other end products, such as sportswear, microwave cookware and biodegradable plant pots, demonstrated how flexible and rigid plastics can be recycled and converted into reusable materials.

The development of sustainable solutions for realizing the full potential of plastics is a key area for Luxus that was highlighted throughout its stand. Also prominent on the stand were details of the company’s brand new website – www.luxus.co.uk – alongside a refreshed corporate structure designed to present its integrated polymer solutions covering plastics compounding, recycling and technical support.
