We are proud to support hands-on learning and to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and manufacturers. Recently, we welcomed members of the 1st Manby Scouts to our site in Louth, Lincolnshire, for an engaging introduction to lean manufacturing and plastics recycling.
Ahead of their visit, the scouts took part in a practical exercise designed to demonstrate the principles of lean manufacturing. Tasked with producing as many paper aeroplanes as possible in five minutes, each scout initially worked independently, producing just one plane.
By reorganising into a structured team with defined roles, clear instructions and an efficient workflow, the group dramatically improved their output to 19 planes within the same timeframe. The exercise highlighted the value of collaboration, standardisation and continuous improvement, key principles that underpin modern manufacturing.
Preparation also included a hands-on session exploring different types of plastics and their properties. The scouts created bouncy balls using balloon wrap and glue and expanded polystyrene beads and observed how absorbent granules react when exposed to water.
These activities provided a practical introduction to materials science, helping the group better understand how plastics behave, how they are used, and why recycling plays such an important role in sustainability.
Inside the Luxus Recycling Process
The scouts began their visit to Luxus with a comprehensive PPE and safety briefing, before touring our recycling and processing facilities.
They observed:
Granulators converting plastic scrap into reusable regrind
Film processing techniques that produce clear recycled pellets
Blending operations that ensure consistent, high-quality material output

The group also visited our extrusion lines and laboratory, where they saw how materials are tested for performance. Demonstrations included melt flow analysis, Izod impact testing and tensile strength measurement - all critical to ensuring materials meet the demands of real-world applications.
Through these insights, the scouts gained an appreciation of how adjusting one material property can influence others, and the expertise required to achieve the right balance for different end uses.

Inspiring Future Talent
The visit concluded with a reflective discussion, allowing the group to share their thoughts and learning outcomes. Feedback highlighted how the experience brought classroom concepts to life and provided a valuable insight into modern manufacturing and recycling.
We were delighted to host the 1st Manby Scouts and would like to thank their leaders for their enthusiasm and preparation. We also extend our appreciation to our team, including Emily Ferrier and our night-shift colleagues, for ensuring the visit was safe, informative and enjoyable.
Supporting STEM and Our Local Community
This visit demonstrates the important role manufacturers can play in supporting STEM education and community engagement. By opening our doors, we aim to help young people better understand the opportunities within our industry - from engineering and science to sustainability and innovation.
